And I don't think you messed up the BG, it's quite nice. Only thing is, that the three don't fit too good into the background.... don't know what the best thing is to do, but perhaps a bit more play with the shadows? Or put some stuff into the background (stones? tree? house?). Then do lighting on these background-items that is exactly the same lighting as it is on the characters... just an idea, never tried it ^^

Or perhaps you play around with the colour-schemes... the pups are in bright, colourful colours while the background is more pale with cooler and less colours... If you have them on different layers, perhaps if you adjust-->colour saturation (or such) and lower the saturation a bit .... mh... yes... errm.. sorry for the monster-comment ^^

A background!!!!!! Wow!!!!! Not bad! You could try to make a better link between the pups and the ground the next time but this picture is still very awsome! I love thos cute little puppies!!!!
